Tuesday morning my father had his second hip replacement surgery. Monday night after I got off work, we drove to Memphis, went to check in to our hotel room for the night... only to find out that the room had been canceled. It seems that when my father checked in, they told him there were two rooms under his name, and did he want to pay for them both right now? It didn't occur to him that since he and I share the same name, one of those rooms might be mine...

To be fair, the fault really lies with the hotel staff, not my father. When I placed our reservation, I told them that I wanted a room close to my father's, and would they please leave a message for him when he checked in, letting him know which room we were going to be in. Had they delivered the message, all would have been clear.

So instead of having the type of room we'd reserved and being right next door to my father's room, we ended up in a slightly lesser room two floors down.

It was still a decent enough room, and the lady at the desk was so embarassed at what had happened that she got us a better discount than we'd have gotten otherwise.

The surgery went well, and by all reports he is recovering nicely. In fact, they're expecting him to go home tomorrow. 8-)

The *really* amazing thing is that none of us killed my little sister, despite the fact that she richly deserved such a fate, many times over. But that's a bit of a rant, so I'll post it separately.

Right now, the important thing is that while he can't get up and down on his own, once he's up he's already able to walk (using a walker) with less pain than he had a week ago. 8-)
