On this date in 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger detonated 73 seconds after liftoff.
At that time I was dating the daughter of the senior design exec at Martin-Marietta -- the man who'd been in charge of the shuttle design project. If the explosion had been determined to be an engineering failure, it was his head that would go on the chopping block.
I can only imagine what those 73 seconds must have been like, and the incredible courage needed for the crew of the following shuttle mission to strap themselves in.
Crazy bastards. God bless them!
( Poem: High Flight )
