At 9:39 a.m. CDT this morning, Discovery and her crew left the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center, making her the first shuttle mission in two and a half years, ever since the tragic loss of Columbia on February 1, 2003.

"Our long wait may be over. On behalf of the many millions of people who believe so deeply in what we do, Godspeed," launch director Mike Leinbach told Discovery commander Eileen Collins and her six colleagues.

Godspeed indeed, Discovery... and may your journey be a safe and successful one. We'll be thinking of you, down here on Earth.
