I'm sorry, but this just completely blows my mind. I really wish I thought this was a hoax, or a bad dream.

The only positive thing I can see in this is that Feinstein is still sane and wants to work within the system, not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Specter on the other hand, shows himself to be the Bush admin's patsy, and not someone who's supposed to represent the interests of the people who elected him.

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it." Thomas Jefferson

"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves." (William Pitt, 1783)

The system we have in place works. The only problem is that Bush doesn't want to be accountable to anyone. Unlimited powers, unrestrained by laws, seem to be Bush's presidential ideals. I grieve for my country and hope that come November we will regain our checks and balances.

So much for the greatest strength of real republican thinking (not the erzatz stuff they're calling "republican" these days) -- to wit, its deep suspicion of government meddling.
