A blessed Samhain to you all.
'Tis the season of the harvest, and this year I had a most wonderful "crop" indeed.
Last weekend several of my martial arts students and I attended a seminar with our grandmaster. At the close of the seminar, he and I surprised my students with a special presentation for them.
Back in April we lost the building that had been our dojo for 17 years, but my guys wouldn't let that stop them. They still wanted to train, and I told them that as long as they wanted to train, I'd train with them. So all summer long they've been coming to my front yard or to a nearby park, even when the heat index was 115 or higher when we were starting class. As our grandmaster put it, these guys are like postmen -- neither rain nor heat nor dark of night will stop them!
As I was making my portion of their presentation, I couldn't help getting choked up to the point that my voice broke. I'm just so damned proud of these guys and their dedication and their hard work. As their teacher, I am humbled by the efforts they have made.
There is a saying that to surpass the teacher is to repay the debt. I believe that these students will do that, and more.
