Last night was ... interesting.
I got to the dojo, had just finished checking the mail, and one of the instructors for one of the other styles that holds classes in our facility was showing me a new flyer he'd done up for his classes. From outside, we hear someone yell, "FIRE!"
Needless to say, we both pelted out the front door to see what was going on -- to find thick black smoke billowing out the windows of the unit adjoining ours!
We called 911 and grabbed our stuff and got out, then spent the next couple of hours watching the firemen dealing with flames taller than their second story. (Our unit has one floor, theirs has two. The flames were topping the roof of their unit.)
From what we've been able to determine, here is what happened.
Four gentlemen live in the unit next to our dojo. One of them refinishes furniture, so has (had) a stash of paint thinner, various stains/removers, etc. Apparently (this part is unconfirmed) there was an electrical fire in his section, it hit those accelerants, and ... well, I'm sure you can guess the rest.
Most importantly, nobody was hurt.
There was considerable damage to the unit next door, and to the possessions of those four gentlemen, but no injuries.
I could not see any damage to the inside of our place. There was a lingering smoke odor, but I don't know at this point if that was ambient or if it had permeated. I also couldn't tell if there was damage to the roof of our unit (their windows look out over our roof, and the flames were coming out those windows). I know that our landlord had people working on the roof earlier that day, patching a leak. Whether there was any relationship between their presence and the fire, I cannot say.
At this point, and until/unless further problems develop, we'll continue holding classes (and the seminar this weekend) as scheduled.
