We come to the end of yet another year, another trip taken 'round that big ball of burning gas we call the sun.
As I look back at the past year, it could definitely have been better... but it could have been SO much worse!
Sometimes I wonder why so many of us set all of our "transitions" in the dark periods. The new day begins at midnight. The new year begins deep in winter. I know that for myself, the times I have had to "remake myself" have been deep in some form of darkness as well. It's almost as if a part of our collective psyche is saying, "We begin in darkness, and that is where we shall end," but I find that somewhat too fatalistic for my tastes.
I don't believe in yielding passively to the darkness. As the icon says, I'm the kind of person who'll keep kicking at it until it bleeds daylight.
Another fellow that I suspect will never "go gently into that good night" is a friend of mine named Matt Brown. He has had much more than his fair share of darkness in his life, yet has somehow managed to fight against it without becoming embittered. In fact, he is generally a very pleasant, cheerful, and gentle man. He posted this youtube link to his facebook page (it cheats -- you've been warned ::G::). I'm posting it here both for when I need a little extra motivation and inspiration to get me back on my feet again for another round, and for anyone else who wants (or needs) some encouragement to let themselves "be powerful beyond measure."
And for those who feel that such things can't apply to you... here's another one.
My crystal ball has been broken for years, so I can't see what this coming year will hold for any of us. It is my hope that we will come back to this place next year, look at how the most recent portion of our journey has been, and be able to say that we have been able to properly mix prudence with the courage of the turtle... who only gets somewhere by sticking his neck out.
Be well, my friends, and may the coming year be an absolutely glorious one for you!
