I was doing okay until I saw the footage of the people outside the Supreme Court singing Amazing Grace.

RBG, thank you for all that you did. Heaven knows, we needed you -- we still do, but it would be unfair and ungracious of us to be anything but grateful that you carried so much load for so long.

Part of me is thinking, "God help us"... but I've always been more inclined to believe that we need to do all within or power before calling on a different Power.

So I guess it's time to figure out how to best bring about what our country needs, what our world needs, and make it happen.

The Dems are threatening to eliminate the Senate filibuster and to add two more justices if The Turtle appoints another Justice, so we'll see what happens. The Senate is about to adjourn until after the election.

Are they actually threatening this, then? I hate that they have to, but um, yeah. (I think it needs to happen, and both sides need to then agree on a standard.)

The problem is that a Senator could simply say 'filibuster' and the bill would be considered filibustered, they wouldn't have to stand there and make a speech or read the phone book or whatever.  Rand Paul did an actual filibuster in 2013 and held the floor for almost 13 hours to protest the clearance of a CIA director.  Ted Cruz did one for 21 hours in October that year to try to derail the budget to defund the Affordable Care Act. It's a tool that the minority party can use because it requires the majority party to come up with a 2/3rds vote to proceed with business on the filibustered issue.  Eliminate it, and the majority party can steamroller the minority party with 51 votes.

Yeah, I don't like the "just say filibuster" approach. If they're going to filibuster, then they ought to have to get up there and give a speech worthy of Leonard McCoy in front of the Romulan Senate, on such things as the religious schism of whether T'chili should or should not include beans!
