A long, long time ago
In a fandom far, far away...
There has been talk for a while now about remaking the Christopher Lambert/Sean Connery/Clancy Brown movie "Highlander." Last I heard, Henry Cavill (Superman, The Witcher) was slotted for the title role.
Frankly, I don't see a need to remake this one. Yes, there are more advanced special effects techniques available now, but I don't consider that to be a reason to re-shoot the movie.
But that's not what I'm here to talk about.
"Highlander" spawned several movies, two television series, several novels, and an entire category of fanfic -- some quite hideous, and some at least on par with the canon material, and some even exceeding it.
Fanfic is especially good at two things, IMO: "patching holes" in the canon, and exploring aspects of the canon universe that the shows/movies/books never bothered with.
Occasionally a fanfic writer will come up with a concept or idea that fits so well into the canon that wide swaths of the ficverse will gleefully adopt it.
One such concept within the Highlander ficverse was that of Lines -- akin to family lines but based on teacher-student relationships -- introduced by the ever-lovely Rhiannon Shaw back in the 1990's with her original character Aidan Logan, starting in "Arrivals and Introductions" (https://archiveofourown.org/series/2632). The entire series is collectively known as either Aidan-verse or The Line War. There are a lot of stories here, and I highly recommend them all. I go back and re-read them from time to time, and am going to be re-starting from the beginning again soon!
[Full disclosure: I am highly biased when it comes to this author and her work, especially this series, for two reasons. One is because I was her fight choreographer for several years, and the other is because I asked her a certain question many moons ago and she said "yes" :-)]

Seriously, though, you're hardly the only one to recommend Rhi's work.
