As you may have guessed from my previous post on this topic, the seminar as a whole went very well, from my POV.

There was one incident that was both positive and negative...

One of the first things I covered with them was what to do in case they or their partner felt dizzy, light-headed, nauseous, etc. -- specifically, get that person seated, with their legs crossed, and call me or my helper immediately! I even walked them through it, showed them what to do if their partner was out cold and his legs were locked out straight, etc.

I didn't really expect it to become an issue, but I wanted them to know enough to do that much, just in case. I knew that if I didn't cover it, one of them would get lucky and knock his partner out cold! ::G::

Well, about half an hour into things, someone started getting dizzy and light-headed. Fortunately, my helper happened to be nearby, and saw the person squatting on the floor. His partner wasn't trying to get him seated, not calling for us... in other words, not doing any of the things we'd just told them a few minutes before that they needed to do!

We get this guy into position and start working on him, offsetting the technique they'd been doing... except instead of getting better, he tells us he's feeling worse. I'm asking his partner how hard he smacked this guy, and his partner (the host, as it turns out) finally reveals that actually, the guy had started feeling light-headed after the *first* technique!

No wonder the poor bastard is feeling worse -- we're trying to fix the wrong thing!

After we reversed what we'd been doing, we managed to get the fellow feeling better, but he still wasn't very spry -- turns out he also hadn't had anything to eat or drink since the night before except for an Atkins Shake that morning, and he burned through what little blood sugar he had. We got him some Gatorade, and soon he was doing better, but it was still a good while before he was willing to step back out onto the floor -- and I don't blame him!

On the "plus" side, if anyone there'd had any doubts about whether or not what I was showing them really worked, seeing that happen resolved their doubts pretty thoroughly!

Needless to say, the next thing I did after we'd gotten this guy taken care of was to reiterate and re-emphasize how important it was that people let me know immediately if they started feeling any ill effects!

There were a couple of people there that, based on information I'd gotten earlier, led me to believe would be "hostile witnesses." I was very pleased to see that not only was no one being disparaging about the information I was presenting, but the fellow that I was most concerned about commented to my helper that (and yes, this is a direct quote) "This guy really knows his shit!"

Not only that, but at one point I happened to look over in his direction and saw him taking notes! I couldn't believe it! Especially since my helper (who is a regular student at the host school) overheard him saying a few weeks ago that I "wouldn't be able to teach him anything" because he's already trained and certified for pressure points because of his law enforcement training! 8-)

Now I'm finding that I have to be careful, because my head is starting to swell!

(And don't worry about your head swelling. Nermal has a solution. ;->)

Yay! That sounds like it all went very well. It's the best compliment to a teacher when his students learn something - especially the ones who didn't expect to!
