I felt this one deserved its own entry, not least because it so thoroughly boggled my mind.

Thursday night, my father and I were sitting out on the deck talking, and he said something that just absolutely blew me away. We'd been talking about some of the stuff we'd been teaching my nephews / his grandsons, and he told me that I was "the best damned teacher he'd ever seen."

WTF? Where did that come from?

Both of his parents were teachers, and damned fine ones -- when they retired, they were given a big fancy retirement dinner, and were both given significant awards, including one for being the longest-teaching couple in the state of MS.

My father even compared me to my grandfather, saying that he had been a damned fine teacher, but that I was "head and shoulders above him."

Okay, I'll admit that I'm pretty good, and that by the time I'm done teaching something to someone they know it -- and know it well -- but... I had to pick up my jaw after hearing him say that.

When he and I were helping my nephew dress his deer, he said something similar to my nephew -- something along the lines of, "Now you pay close attention to what he's telling you, because there's no finer teacher walking this earth than him."

I hope y'all will forgive me -- I'm afraid I'm going to be grinningly boggled for a bit over this one.

Five years ago you showed me that sticky hands thing. It still sticks in my mind (pun intended, sorry).

Congrats on the compliment! Such words from a parent should be treasured.

Awwwww. *smile* Doesn't surprise me at all, as you have a way of breaking things into their component structures and underlying principles that makes learning a very...*sensible* process... but that degree of being "seen" by someone who knows you well (and therefore can often take one's character for granted) is very precious indeed.

Should have replied closer to the time -- but hell, yeah. He's right. Certainly head and shoulders above a lot of the ones I've had, and a model I keep in mind when in front of my own.

Oh.

Um.

Damn, I don't know what to say to that, except thank you!

and a model I keep in mind when in front of my own.

I'm not sure I understood what you meant by this part?
