Wait... since when do I do these things?

Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] gryphonrhi: Name five qualities you always find attractive in fictional characters.

1) Cleverness / trickiness - the ability to "think outside the box" and come up with a creative solution that actually has a chance of working, especially since the opposition isn't expecting it. For example, Han Solo "ramming" the Millenium Falcon into the bridge of a Star Destroyer, then clamping onto their hull and lying doggo until it's time to drift away with a bunch of debris the SD dumped.

2) Loyalty / looking out for their own - the idea that there are people you've gone through Hell with, and you never leave them there on the return trip. For example, Zoe and the rest of Serenity's crew going into BadGuyWhoseNameICan'tRemember's space station to rescue Mal and Wash. Or a much older and more obscure reference, Jirel of Joiry, riding into Hellsgarde to rescue her men.

3) A strong joi de vie - not getting caught up in a "gloom and doom" mentality, even when the world around them looks pretty bleak. For example, the two most recent Doctors Who (haven't seen the earlier incarnations, but I presume the same holds true for them). At the moment, I can't thing of any character who takes more sheer delight in life.

4) An ability (and willingness) to laugh at themselves and the world around them. Plenty of examples here, but one that just came to mind is Joe Dawson and Methos stranded by the side of the road, and Methos is having no luck flagging down a ride for them. Joe claims he can do better, and Methos steps aside to let him try. Joe sees another car coming, sticks out his thumb, and gives Methos that really devilish grin of his, saying, "Observe... and record!" Or another episode where Joe is about to be executed for violating his Watcher's oath, and the guy with the gun tells him to get on his knees. Joe just looks at him, snorts, and says, "Not in this lifetime!"

5) Being "appropriately vicious" - being able to recognize that there are times when you have to set aside the niceties and do what needs to be done, even if it is unpleasant. For example, Giles just looking down at helpless Ben/Glory, and telling him, "Buffy is a hero -- but I'm not" as he places his hand over Ben's nose and mouth. Or Shepherd Book picking up a rifle, and making the comment that yes, the Bible is very specific about killing people, "but it's a whole lot fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps."

BadGuyWhoseNameYouCan'tRemember = Niska.

And yes, on all of the above. Those'll get my attention every time, too. Along with a certain amount of snarky irreverency *g*.
