I wanted to get this out before this journal becomes all about the Snowflake Shenanigans. It's not going to be as in-depth because I have lots of ends of year reading reflections planned already, and because I'm already two months behind, so I just can't put it off longer by stressing about reviews and whatnot.

Of course if you want to chat about any of these books, I'd love to do that with any of you. Good or bad.

First: here is November's Reads with my ratings. (Sorry to the person who recced "I Kissed Alice" it wasn't you, it was me.❤️)

And here are December's reads. Sadly, I don't have the cool graphic because Fable is too busy giving me a lot of Year in Review graphics (more on that later). Fortunately (or unfortunately depending how you measure these things) I didn't read a lot of December.

Zenobia July by Lisa Bunker ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Nightmare Before Kissmas by Sara Raasch ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Make You Mine This Christmas by Lizzie Huxley-Jones ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Kiss Her Once For Me by Alison Cochrun ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75

And here's some more stats from Fable.

I cannot remember the name of the book nor the author and this is basically my last resort, ive been trying to find it on and off since middle school and have been unsuccessful.
a kid is out with his parents (either at a dig site with his dad or at a picnic with him) and stumbles upon an arrowhead leftover from a war. the kid touches it and pricks his finger on it while also absorbing a sliver of the arrowhead and gains the power to absorb powers from other people (I can't remember if he has to kill them or not), he ends up falling in love with a snake demon lady? but she never reciprocates. and her dad was also the one the war was about. at the end of the book the evil guy goes back in time and changes history and that's how the book ends.

I love this quote.  It's actually good advice.

I had to. It's tradition.

My rule is that I only create fanworks for this card for public domain properties (doesn't feel right, this word, we'll workshop that later).

Edited with some info, so I can know at a glance if it's a song or a book. And snark, because the bingo generator spat me out Just Imagine XD

Surprise appearances from Lon Channey and Marlene Dietrich, and subsequently, Hollaender.

The Documents in the Case (book) Someday I'll Find You (music) Seas Beneath (movie)
Love for Sale (song) Grumpy (movie by Cukor) Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen (music)
Falling in Love Again (Can't Help It) (music from The Blue Angel) The Unholy Three (1930 movie) Just Imagine (my movie nemesis)

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

Happy New Year! ✨️

This poem was written outside the regular prompt calls. It was inspired by a remark from [personal profile] fuzzyred. It also fills the "Deep Blue Sea" square in my 5-1-25 card for the Colors Fest Bingo. This poem has been sponsored by a pool with [personal profile] fuzzyred. It belongs to the Kraken thread of the Polychrome Heroics series.

"Ruling from Beneath"

Kraken had always contained
enough scientists to understand
observation changing experiments.

They realized that ruling from beneath
would cause less ripples, less risk of
rocking the boat, than trying to be
the shadow behind the throne.

Nobody would ever look for
world leaders underneath
the deep blue sea.

Here is my card for the Public Domain Day Bingo over in [community profile] allbingo. The fest runs from January 1-31. (See all my 2026 bingo cards.)

If you'd like to sponsor a particular square, especially if you have an idea for what character, series, or situation it would fit -- talk to me and we'll work something out. I've had a few requests for this and the results have been awesome so far. This is a good opportunity for those of you with favorites that don't always mesh well with the themes of my monthly projects. I may still post some of the fills for free, because I'm using this to attract new readers; but if it brings in money, that means I can do more of it. That's part of why I'm crossing some of the bingo prompts with other projects, such as the Poetry Fishbowl.

Underlined prompts have been filled.

This is a new post to track goals that I want to set for 2027. During January, the 2026 list will remain relatively fluid. I might add a few things to it later on. Toward the end of the year, however, I usually start thinking of goals for the following year. Previously, I started putting those at the bottom of the 2024 goals list. So I figured it was time to make a separate post for this purpose. That should make it easier to compose the goal list for 2027 when the time comes.

Friending memes, or friendzies, offer a great way to connect with new people. It occurs to me that I can list them here, with links to my entries, and have a useful reference.

This is the best time of year to run such events, because lots of people dust off their blogs in January. Also, [community profile] snowflake_challenge runs this month with challenges on odd-numbered days, and it's among the biggest events on Dreamwidth. (See my 2023 post on Friending Memes.)

1. Dear Eric: In 2020, my now-wife and I were engaged. My mother is a nurse and has asthma and was deeply hit with mental and emotional stress from the pandemic. She would not attend most wedding planning events and would always be concerned with germs, wearing an N95 mask and keeping her distance.

My wife had a completely opposite reaction to the pandemic. It was more of a nuisance to her. In her eyes, there was no threat. My wife began to develop a feeling of abandonment from someone who was supposed to be her mother-in-law. She opened up to me about how much she was hurt, and I told her it wasn't my mother's fault and that she was just petrified by the pandemic and it was the only thing she could do.

My wife told me I was taking my mother’s side. Hurtful messages were sent by my wife and my mother just shut down the relationship and blocked her.mMy wedding was in October 2021. My mother braved the crowd of 155 people and attended without a mask. I was so proud of her. But my wife was angry about her presence.

My wife and I are still fighting occasionally about this issue, and the spats are becoming increasingly more intense. She still says extremely hurtful things about my mother often. My mother’s mindset was extreme but considering her working at a nursing home and having asthma, it’s totally understandable. That isn’t believable, according to my wife.

I am writing for guidance to understand how to solve this mess. Was I in the wrong for how I initially reacted toward my wife? I just don’t want this to destroy my marriage.

2. Dear Eric: Our son and his girlfriend of 24 years got married by a judge. It was a civil ceremony necessary to get him on her health insurance.

He approached my wife and me and said, "we're not into social media.” I did not glean from this that he meant we should post nothing at all. To share the good news with my friends, I did post one photo. Late the next night he texted us to take it down, saying "we asked you directly not to do this." I replied, I'm sorry, I didn't understand that I was not to post anything at all.

I feel bad because my son seems to feel he can forbid me from sharing this news with my friends. Many are longtime friends from church who have known my son for decades. It seems to me a little pushy for him to forbid me to share with my friends what I feel is good news. He seems to want to downplay it.

Should I not have made the post and leaned more toward caution? Should I have interpreted "we're not into social media" differently? I welcome your advice about how to perceive this situation and where to go from here.

3. Dear Eric: My children are grown. Two live locally and one super local (our home!). One is married with young children, and we see them often, spending most holidays with them. (In-laws are unpleasant, to say the least.)

Our middle child is in a relatively new relationship that has become pretty serious. We planned a beach vacation with my in-laws (our kids’ cousins, aunt and uncles) for Thanksgiving, which everyone seemed excited about when we booked the house.

Now the middle child will come with his girlfriend for just a few days and then fly to her family for the actual holiday. He has been noncommittal about Christmas because they may again travel to her family. When we got married, we alternated holidays with our families or stayed home. We were careful not to favor one side over the other. I really like his girlfriend but am sad that he seems OK with spending all holidays with her family.

Any suggestions on how to broach this subject without sounding whiny or critical? If it matters, she only recently moved to our area.

– Sharing Holidays

Cross-posted the K-9 primer to PLACES! :D That I want to promote a bit individually, so here we go:

  • Cross-posted to [community profile] fanifesto, which is a comm I always enjoy seeing posts on (and wish that happened a bit more often!🕯️). The rules are so good ("This thing is amazing. Here's why.") Incidentally, years ago I pledged to make a post there as part of the [community profile] snowflake_challenge, which I thought would be about Hawks and DabiHawks, and although I'm ahem 3 or 4 years late I'm glad I have done it now :D K-9, K-9, K-9!
  • Cross-posted to [community profile] anime_manga (and at least one person mentioned they read all of K-9 based on it >:D \o/)
  • Cross-posted to [community profile] fourormore with even more OT4 pics XD Spoilers warnings I guess.

Then I linked to a couple of my K-9 fics on [community profile] polyamships and sneaked in a link to the primer too. Teehee :D

Signal boosts:

  • Since I mentioning the [community profile] snowflake_challenge above, it's returning for 2026! I know I have a few newer-to-dreamwidth folks in my circles and want to say, this is a lovely and chill challenge that runs through January, and a great way to meet and make new friends on Dreamwidth. I found many friends there and warmly recommend it!

Posted by Ask a Manager

I’m on vacation. Here are some past letters that I’m making new again, rather than leaving them to wilt in the archives.

1. I want to break up with my boyfriend — but I work for his parents

I just graduated from college last spring with a degree in a field that’s rather difficult to find work in. Lucky for me, my boyfriend’s parents happened to own a business in that field and they had a position open that was basically my ideal role (and probably several steps above any entry-level position I would have gotten elsewhere). I saw it as a great career stepping stone and accepted their offer. It has been far from perfect (typical small, family-run business issues), but overall, I’m comfortable with the position and wanted to stay in it for at least a year before moving on to the next great adventure.

Cut to now, nine months in, and I’ve realized I really need to break up with my boyfriend, as soon as possible. My grand decision to work for his parents is feeling pretty stupid (I’ve felt pretty dumb about it for a while now — feeling trapped by this job situation is part of what made me realize we need to break up). My boyfriend and I live together and our lease is not up until July. I’m willing to eat some money and move back in with my parents while paying off my rent, but in order to do that, I need to keep a job.

I’ve started job hunting, but am left with the decision to miserably prolong the breakup until whenever the time comes that I have something lined up, or continuing to work for his parents post-break-up and take whatever fresh hell that arrangement presents me with. They are good people, and I don’t think they would fire me or consciously retaliate in any way, but I still feel that there’s no way it will really function well.

I’m also kicking myself because I’m so close to the one-year mark, I’ve invested a lot of time and energy into this position, and never did I consider what would happen if all of my professional experience was tied up with an ex’s family. Like, what would a reference from them look like for future positions? Again, I think they will wish me well in life, but it would still feel awkward asking them to speak on my behalf to future employers. On that note, if I do leave before the one-year mark, what should I say to future employers about my leaving? All personal drama aside, I think I’ve done well in the position and accomplished a lot. I would hate to leave it off my resume to avoid bringing up my rather poor judgement on accepting the role.

If your boyfriend’s parents are decent people, they should handle this professionally and kindly. It will be awkward, yes, but awkward isn’t the same thing as horrible or insurmountable — and the awkwardness may go away sooner than you think if you make a point of being really professional and hard-working and showing that you’re determined to continue being a good employee and not let the break-up impact your work. (And really, if they’re thoughtful people, it occurred to them that this could happen when they hired you.)

They’d have to be really petty to let this impact the references they give you, and you say they’re not, so I don’t think you have to worry too much about that. You definitely don’t need to leave this job off your resume!

I do agree, though, you should definitely be job searching actively. There’s nothing magical about making it to the one-year mark in a job — nine months is not all that different from 12 months in that regard. It’s still a short-ish stay, but that’s not a big deal for your first job right out of school. (But you do want to make sure that you stay in the next one for at least a couple of years so it doesn’t start to look like a pattern.) You could tell interviewers that you’re looking to leave because it’s a small family-run business and you’ve realized that you’d like to work somewhere more established/with more structure/whatever makes sense for the context. Interviewers will understand that, and you won’t need to get into the boyfriend situation at all.

2. I had an awkward elevator encounter with the CEO

I ran into my boss while waiting for the elevator and things went south. Our company is huge, and our CEO is a very important figure. Everyone seems to always be on their best behavior when she comes around the corner. Out of nervousness, after she asked how my day was going, I replied that it was going well, but that “Mondays are always slow and droopy.”

Our CEO is very big on productivity and positivity. She even preaches about the importance of productivity under any circumstance on a weekly basis during our massive company meetings. The look on her face when I said this seemed alarming. She followed my statement by changing the subject to mention the weather. Is this just paranoia brought on my extreme anxiety or did I really just mess up? Our CEO is great at remembering faces and I’m worried that this will affect how she sees me or, worse, she will tell my direct supervisor what I said. Should I be worried? I feel as though I’m the only idiot to have ever said something like this to her. Help!

It wasn’t a great thing to say, but it’s not horrible either. That kind of comment about Mondays isn’t exactly unheard of; I’m sure she’s heard similar things before (and I’m sure you’re not the only one to make an awkward remark to her out of nerves either). I doubt that she was still thinking about this even 10 minutes later, but hey, if she does mention it to your boss, your boss will hopefully tell her that there’s no reason to worry about you (assuming that’s true), so that wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Give yourself permission to laugh at what happened and then put it behind you.

2018

3. I don’t want to sit next to my wife at work

My wife and I work at the same company, an insurance broking firm — we met through work 10 years ago. We work in the same overall department now, but where there is any crossover with the work each of our teams does, I make sure I assign other people to deal with her, and she does the same vice versa so we keep work and marriage separate. We currently sit at other ends of the office about 30 yards apart so we cannot even hear each other at present.

The problem is that we now have a couple more employees than desks, so are moving to what our boss is calling agile working, i.e. just use whatever desk you can. It will work okay as there are always people off or away on business. My wife and I are okay with it in principle, but we don’t want to get to a situation where the only spare desks are together. Imagine if we have had an argument about something, or if we discuss work and have a disagreement.

So ideally I would like us to have allocated desks so we can stay sat as far apart as possible, but our boss is basically saying no, it’s first come first served to be fair to everyone, and we should just get to the office earlier to ensure we can bag desks far apart. This sounds wrong to me, and I would be grateful if you could suggest how I can maybe take this forward.

Your boss might be more open to it if there happen to be two desks in particularly undesirable locations and you offer to take those two worst ones as your permanent spots, as a trade-off for not having to suffer under this new plan like everyone else will. But if there aren’t two “worst” desks, or if he’s not open to it, then he’s right that all you can do is try to get there a little early to ensure you’re not next to each other. While it’s true that it’s not good for married people to sit next to each other at work — for all sorts of reasons — he’s also right that it might not feel fair to others if you two get permanent spots to store your stuff while they have to scramble for space every day.

2018

4. My company says I didn’t return their property on my last day

What can happen if you say you returned all company property after being terminated, but the company says you didn’t? My employer fired me on Monday, asked for my badge, cell, iPad, briefcase, and chargers. I gave them the badge and cell and went to my car to get the chargers, briefcase, and iPad and then left them in the office right inside the door and left. I then received a letter with my final paycheck saying that I told them I was going to my car and never returned.

It’s too late for this now, but ideally you’d want to give the property to an actual person; if you just leave it inside the door, there’s too much chance that it will get misplaced by someone who doesn’t know the context for why it’s there. If you told them you were going to your car to get these items and then just stuck them inside the door and left, and someone moved (or took) the items, I can see why they thought you just took off. And I totally get wanting to get the hell out of there after being fired, but you did kind of play fast and loose with that property, even if you didn’t intend to.

In any case, all you can do is explain what happened. I’d say something like this to them: “The day that I left, January 26, I left two chargers, a briefcase, and an iPad directly inside the front door of the building, right around 2:45 p.m. My understanding was that you wished me to leave after returning this property, which I did. I hope I didn’t misunderstand. In any case, if there are any loose ends still to be tied up, please let me know.”

Also, it’s not clear to me whether they paid you the full amount due in your final check or whether they’re withholding the cost of these items. In most states, they owe you the full amount of your final paycheck either way, unless you signed a written agreement to the contrary.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 1, 2026 is:

amortize • \AM-er-tyze\  • verb

To amortize something, such as a mortgage, is to pay for it by making regular payments over a long period of time.

// If you apply extra payments directly to your loan balance as a principal reduction, your loan can be amortized sooner.

See the entry >

Examples:

“As part of some of the league’s commercial deals—where companies pay the league for rights of some sort—the NFL has received equity or warrants. … The warrants are priced at fair market value on the date of vesting and amortized over 10 years.” — Jacob Feldman and Eben Novy-Williams, Sportico, 5 Aug. 2025

Did you know?

When you amortize a loan, you figuratively “kill it off” by paying it down in installments, an idea reflected in the etymology of amortize. The word comes ultimately from a Latin word meaning “to kill” that was formed in part from the Latin noun mors, meaning “death”; it is related both to murder and a word naming a kind of loan that is usually amortized: mortgage. The original use of amortize dates to the 14th century, when amortizing was about transferring ownership of a property to a corporation, and especially to an ecclesiastical corporation—that is, a corporation consisting wholly of clergy. Such land was said to be in mortmain, which under the feudal system meant that the property was permanently exempt from a lord’s usual payment collections. Mortmain is of course another mors word. Its second syllable comes from Latin manus, meaning “hand,” the implication being that the property was held in the dead hand of a corporation—a hand incapable of paying out.

Please consult the tagset for the list of fandoms and relationships you can request and offer. If you can't find a canon you nominated, make sure to check Uncategorized Fandoms, which is where fandoms will be listed if they haven't appeared on AO3 yet or if I've had to alter the canonical tag.

Important: While the Relationships field on the signup form has a dropdown that, when you start typing, should connect with the tagset, AO3 always doesn't display all nominated relationships for a fandom. If the relationship you're trying to request/offer is in the tagset but not appearing as a selection that you can make, please copy-paste it directly from tagset into your signup form. This Monster Wants to Eat Me, Episode 13 (Season Finale)

It wasn’t really a great year for anime. I wasn’t much into the mainstream anime. (The shows were OK, but I didn’t have lots of enthusiasm for making time to watch them.) I don’t think there are any shows I need to have in my personal library. But if I were to rewatch a show, the following series would be at the top of the list.

1. This Monster Wants to Eat Me
Oh, hey! Something that isn’t an isekai, an adventurer quest, shonen action, or a high school rom-com! This fantasy drama had me guessing every episode – and I cared about the characters. I liked the art, direction, dialog – and story.

2. A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof
Perhaps I needed something lighthearted. Shaft is a great studio, and they did an excellent job directing and animating this fluffy comedy. And I have a soft spot for ninja girls. Plus, Shaft can do comedy. (Can you say, Pani Poni Dash?)

3. May I Ask For One Final Thing?
Scarlet, The Lady of Beatings, is just so much fun to watch. And the villains deserve every fistful they get. So satisfying.

4. Grisaia: Phantom Trigger
Well, I’m a big fan of The Fruit of Grisaia and character designs by Akio Watanabe – so a sequel is a no-brainer for me. Phantom Trigger isn’t as good as predecessor Fruit/Labyrinth/Eden, but the anime succeeds as a guilty pleasure. The characters are similar to their predecessors.

5. I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire!
Just plain fun. Liam is wildly successful in spite of all odds and players against him. He and his poor fiefdom deserve all the wins they get. The first episode was heartbreaking, but things turned around after that.

1. DEAR ABBY: My son has completely given up on dating. Whether it's blind dates, casual meetings with members from our church or dating events I pay for and make him go to, he still hasn't found a wife. At 36, he should already have children and a partner, but despite the best efforts of my wife and me, he remains unmarried.

Our son is 6 feet tall, athletic and godly, and he has his own apartment and clears $100k a year. Despite all this, he still doesn't have a wife. It's even reached the point that he gets angry at my wife and me for pressuring him. During a few of the blind dates we set up for him, I watched from afar, and each time he was stood up! How can I ensure my son gets a wife before I grow too old? -- DAD LOSING HOPE IN NEW YORK

2. Dear Care and Feeding,

I have a wonderful son in his early 20s. He is intelligent, articulate, has a great sense of humor and taste in music, is very responsible (he’s even managed to save a sizable chunk of cash at a young age), and is very handsome. I realize I have a biased view here, but I get comments all the time about what a wonderful young man he is. In school and employment, his teachers, co-workers, and supervisors have always raved about him. I couldn’t possibly be prouder. There’s just one problem…

He is struggling socially, and more specifically on the romantic front. He’s not a drinker or partier, so he doesn’t engage in a lot of the typical activities that others in his age group do, and that leaves him going to work, then coming home. He’s lonely, unhappy, and has no confidence in himself. The one time he attempted to date in high school, he was met with some rejection, and he just hasn’t put himself out there again. I see how much it’s hurting him to see others his age dating, getting engaged, and even married, and I’ve heard him make comments about how he’d like those things for himself as well. I know that there would be lots of women who would love to date a young man like my son. I encouraged him to set up a profile on a dating site, and he did, but nothing has come of that either. I don’t want to meddle or interfere, but I hate to see how hurt he is.

We have talked over and over about how he will need to push outside of his comfort zone (our house) if he wants to meet someone. He has had professional counseling for social anxiety, which I’ve encouraged and helped facilitate. He’s so miserable being alone, and I want so badly to help him, that I’ve considered trying to set up a date for him myself, but I don’t want to be THAT mom. I love my son, and I want to help him find his happiness. What should I do here? How can I help him? I can’t help thinking that getting him out on one date to break the ice would maybe be just what he needs. Or maybe this is all none of my business? It’s hard to ignore when he lives in my home and shares with me how much this is hurting him. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

—Maybe Meddling Mama

1. DEAR ABBY: My 13-year-old son was getting off the school bus. His friend was in front of him. My son thought it would be funny to take his friend's water bottle out of his backpack and drop it on the pavement. A few days later, my son got sent to the principal's office, not because he was in trouble but because the parents had called the school to complain about their son's scuffed water bottle and wanted it replaced. They asked for $23.

I wrote a check and was tempted to add a snarky comment, but I didn't. Yes, my son should keep his hands to himself, but the water bottle is still functional. My son apologized. Am I living my life wrong, or is it OK that they just invoiced me like that? -- UNSURE IN ILLINOIS

2. We own a cabin across the street from our rural home. We rent it out occasionally. Our latest renter was the son of a neighbor who was in town for the holidays. We welcomed him and gave him our “friends and family” discount. On his first day there, we noticed that he had plugged his car into the charging station in the cabin’s garage. I understand his need to charge his car — but not at someone else’s expense. His behavior struck me as rude and presumptuous. Your thoughts?

3. My husband’s relatives are visiting from another country over Christmas. The two adults speak English fluently, but they haven’t taught their children — ages 3 and 5 — a word of it. This means that I will not be able to communicate with the children at all and they will be frightened by everyone they meet at holiday events since they won’t understand anything. The parents claim they haven’t taught their children English because they will learn it in school. But they planned this visit a year ago! So, because of their laziness, I will be excluded from many conversations in my own home. I see no point in learning their language since there is no language barrier among the adults. This is not the children’s fault, but their parents’ behavior is annoying and deliberate. How should I handle it?

4. A friend invited me to her New Year’s Eve party again this year, and again, she asked me to bring a dish to serve. A potluck! The food she offers herself is undistinguished. Granted, being a hostess is demanding, but my feeling is that if you can’t manage to feed your guests, you shouldn’t invite them. I would never ask mine to supply the repast. I am offended at the thought of buying and cooking food for her party. How can I decline her request to bring food but nevertheless attend the party?

5. Dear Eric: I own a few cars that I park on the street in front of my house. Some new toddlers and preschool kids are learning how to ride a bike. They circle constantly in front of my house instead of the house they rent next door to my house.

The neighbors park all over the street, and do not use the driveway. They have several cars and live in a cul-de-sac. They are not watching or teaching the kids how to ride or even stay out of the road as cars come through. But that's another issue. My question is, do I have any rights as a homeowner and county resident to ask the renters to stay away from the area in front of my house and the cars parked in front? My concern being the kids might hit my cars, and it's actually annoying to see them in front of my house for hours. People think these are my kids and think I'm not watching them.

What can I do?

Prince Julius von Pallistan and Scarlet El Vandimion
Prince Julius von Pallistan and Scarlet El Vandimion
May I Ask For One Final Thing? Episode 13 (Season Finale)

I’m a romantic, and I always am on the lookout for couples who find love and happiness in the midst of generally tempestuous circumstances. Here are my couples of the year.

1. Scarlet El Vandimion x Prince Julius von Pallistan, May I Ask For One Final Thing?
Prince Julius has carried a torch for Scarlet for years, while Scarlet is oblivious. Scarlet sees Julius’s playfulness as adversarial. Yet, Julius is the only person who accepts Scarlet for who she truly is – and laughs every time Scarlet shows her colors, while everyone else is dismayed. In actuality, these two make a great couple. Julius is a really good guy.

2. Philia Adenauer x Prince Osvalt Parnacorta, The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom
This is another one-sided romance, initially. Philia is too socially immature to recognize Osvalt’s honest affection. But she’ll come around. Osvalt is a really good guy.

3. Melphiera Marchalrayd x Duke Aristide Rogier do Galbraith, Pass the Monster Meat, Milady!
What I liked about this series is that the author didn’t waste any time getting this couple to become a couple. The Duke proposed in episode 2, and the couple were officially engaged in episode 4. And the Blood-Mad Duke and the Voracious Villainess are a fine couple. Aristide is a really good guy.

4. Princess Amelia Rosequartz x Akira Oda, My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds That of the Hero’s
Akira is too much of a loner to be in relationship – or so I thought. He surprised me in episode 7 by making a vow to Amelia and declaring his love. So they are officially a couple – and I am happy with that.

5. Marie x Kazuhiro Kitase, Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf!
Marie and Kazuhiro are a wholesome couple, sharing adventures in two worlds – and enjoying themselves immensely. Happy couples are fun to watch.

Challenge 285:
FRESH START
Sometimes your best option is just to start over.

Maybe it’s a project that isn’t going well, or a job that hasn’t worked out. Maybe it’s a new day, or a new year, one of those timepoints that encourage you to think about changes you want to make. Maybe it’s something more drastic – a new career or even a whole new life. Whatever the case, it’s time for a new start.

What does that look like? Is it by choice, or are your characters forced into it by circumstance? Is it easy, or not so much?

Write a story about a fresh start.

BONUS GOAL: “New year, new me!"

If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Scarlet El Vandimion
Scarlet El Vandimion
May I Ask For One Final Thing? Episode 13 (Season Finale)

1. Scarlet El Vandimion, May I Ask For One Final Thing?
Scarlet is simply too much fun to watch. She is intelligent, beautiful, powerful... calm to the point of appearing cold... and viciously wields fists of justice. Her dry statements of fact are direct and humorous. And she always seems to be having fun. Scarlet can be my champion any day.

2. Murasaki Ikoma, Grisaia: Phantom Trigger
What can I say? I have a soft spot in my heart for ninja girls. Murasaki is a classic anime ninja girl – quiet, pretty, dry-witted, stealthy, and skilled. I want her on my side.

3. Miko Yashiro, This Monster Wants to Eat Me
One would never know that Miko is a yokai who eats humans. But her love and support for Hinako is pure and unwavering. No one is more earnest than Miko. Miko sacrifices part of herself to keep her yokai side under control. Now that’s true love.

4. Mizuki Usurai, Flower and Asura
The second-year president of the Sumomogaoka High School Broadcasting Club brandishes an infectious optimism. Her upbeat and adventurous attitude move the people around her into action.

5. Amagi, I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire!
Female in appearance and behavior, Amagi is the AI maid robot that serves Liam Sera Banfield. Amagi is supremely competent as well as totally loyal to Liam, even when Liam demands nonsensical (in their world) things. While Amagi has a stoic and logical demeanor, it’s clear that she truly loves Liam.

Other Candidates
Alina Clover, I May Be a Guild Receptionist, But I'll Solo Any Boss to Clock Out on Time
Marie, Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf!

When I used to teach creative writing, I would tell the students to make their characters want something right away -- even if it’s only a glass of water. Characters paralyzed by the meaningless of modern life still have to drink water from time to time.

Excellent advice. It gets the story moving and helps readers relate to the main character.
